STROIKA Turns Four

Looking Back, Moving Forward

March 9, 2026

STROIKA marks our fourth anniversary at yet another difficult moment, which affirms the urgency of our mission.

Watch our birthday video message to learn about how we’re spending 2026: helping you not just resist, but persist.

And read our anniversary email below, which reflects on all that we have accomplished over the last four years -- and gives some practical advice for how you too can be an anti-authoritarian in these times.

Here’s what your support has made possible, year by year

2022

Born in a moment of rupture

Registered one day after Russia’s full-scale invasion, STROIKA launched by raising emergency support for overlooked grassroots groups in Ukraine. What began as a $100,000 goal grew into over a million dollars delivered directly to frontline organizations, without red tape.

2023

Building the network

We launched the Anti-Authoritarian Fund to support activists and journalists defending democracy, justice, and pluralism around the world. We provided rapid, flexible funding and designed intersectional convenings for exiled journalists, lawyers, artists, and LGBTQ+ activists across borders — pairing collaboration with resources to turn ideas into action.

2024

Embedding preparedness

During the mega-election year, STROIKA launched the Bespoke Resilience Fund, to strengthen civil society’s preparedness for mounting attacks. We provided direct access to legal, financial, digital-security, and peer-support networks – by paying experts to work with grassroots organizations who lack the resources to do it themselves.

2025

Cultivating resilience

As civil society faced overwhelm by design, STROIKA worked to bring both instructive hope and much-needed resources to anti-authoritarian movements.

We launched PRECEDENTED to share insights from activists and journalists from around the world — those who have lived through authoritarian pressure and are continuing to work with courage, creativity, and integrity. We also shared our pragmatic, clear-eyed, but hopeful analyses with the public.

Most critically, we provided small grants directly to the anti-authoritarian leaders who need them most —  rapidly and efficiently.

We were proud to support incredible partners this year, including:

🏗️  US climate justice leaders

🏗️  Global immigrants’ rights movements

🏗️  Black American trans organizers

🏗️  Puerto Rican feminist activists

🏗️  Ugandan human rights lawyers

🏗️  Russian anti-war activists

🏗️  Investigative journalists working in exile

How to be an anti-authoritarian

“You are not obligated to complete the work, but neither are you free to abandon it.”

- Speak out against injustice in all the ways that feel safe for you.

- Support local organizations and mutual aid projects in your community with your time, money, and talents.

- Share PRECEDENTED with your community — because we could all use some hopeful stories from those who’ve lived and worked and through authoritarianism.

- Continue to find joy and cultivate hope! And remember to make space for grief, too — we need to take time to collectively mourn the world we deserved, before we can dream up an even better world for our future.

- Consider a tax-deductible donation to STROIKA, so we can continue supporting our incredible partners around the world.

With appreciation and determination,

Tatyana and Yelena
