STROIKA had the pleasure of speaking with NYU historian Ruth Ben-Ghiat and the Lucid substack community about where the US finds itself today. We discussed US exceptionalism, the challenge of rebuilding institutions that have been destroyed, and the many places we are actually seeing hope in these difficult days.
The Lucid community is an active and engaged one, and we especially enjoyed the unrecorded Q&A with the listeners that followed our more formal interview. Thanks to their thoughtful questions, we also talked about:
- The importance of local organizing and small acts of resistance
- The power of faith communities
- The long history of white supremacist violence and voter suppression in this country (this is precedented!)
- The necessity for joy
We also spoke about the importance of feeling the grief of this moment. We are all feeling shattered by the violence in Minneapolis, across the US, and around the globe. Please take the time to come together with your community (online and in person!) to mourn collectively for the world we find ourselves in – and to dream together about the future world we would like to see.
Consider giving to STROIKA’s Anti-Authoritarian Fund: your tax-deductible donations will provide critical support to the frontline groups working for a better future around the world. If you know of an organization or activist that would be a good fit for STROIKA’s global anti-authoritarian network, don’t hesitate to contact us. And seek out the progressive local organizations and civic movements that inspire you in your own communities, and find ways to give of your time and talents.
