As the US government increased its pressure on the non-profit sector, many still feel unsure of how to respond. In a panel moderated by Devex reporter Jessica Abrahams, Tatyana Margolin provides insight together with Veronika Mora, Director of the Hungarian Okotars Foundation, and with Kay Guinane, founder of the Charity & Security Network.
Asked whether NGOs could simply 'ride out the storm' until the next election, Tatyana was clear: “I don’t think we have a single lesson from history of folks just sitting on the sidelines of rising authoritarianism and it dissipating on its own."
She explained that "this is a marathon. This is not a sprint. This may be a very long-term battle. … I think we should absolutely not be waiting for and expecting things to get better without our pushback." She provided a nuanced analysis of where the US finds itself today, and gave practical advice to non-profit organizations and philanthropic institutions looking to secure their work for the long term.
Tatyana's insights complemented the lived experience of Veronika Mora in Hungary, and the historical perspectives of previous attacks on US NGOs provided by Kay Guinane. We encourage you to watch the discussion.
